The Legend Behind Alaknanda River

Once upon a time, a king named Bhagirath learned that his ancestors were cursed and stuck in the underworld. He asked Lord Brahma for help, and Brahma told him that he would need to bring the sacred Ganga River to earth to cleanse his ancestors’ souls.

Bhagirath went to Lord Shiva and asked for his help to bring Ganga to earth. “Lord Shiva, can you catch Ganga in your hair as she falls from the heavens and bring her to earth?” he pleaded.

Lord Shiva agreed to help but warned Bhagirath, “Ganga is a powerful force. I will need to contain her in my hair and slowly release her on earth.”

Bhagirath prayed and performed penance for years until Ganga was finally emanated from Lord Shiva’s locks and landed on earth, creating the Alaknanda River.
